After our visit to the Franz Joseph glacier, it was the turn of the Fox. Located a few kilometers from his twin brother, it is extended by a length of 12 kilometers and it is one of the most accessible in the world.

There is a road that starts from the nearby town of Weheka and leads to the foot of the glacier. The day dawned sunny and we traveled accompanied by several groups of tourists of the nearly one thousand newspapers that visit the glacier in high season. Because of the different meteorology and being surrounded by much more people, we found it less overwhelming than Franz Joseph, but it was still a beautiful spectacle of nature.

We got into the gorge through which the glacier descends, walking in parallel through the area that was still composed of rocks while looking for a point to enter the ice. In the town we had been flipping through pamphlets with the prices of organized excursions and decided to try to ride one on our own. It was not difficult for us to find the step we were looking for. Within the first third of the visible glacier, we saw some steps carved into the ice by the human hand. In addition, to help you on the climb, there was a rope that served as a railing and some wooden sticks finished in a metal spout to be able to nail in the ice along the way.

We do not think twice, we took a stick each, we grabbed the rope and began the ascent. We walked for a while on the dangerous ramps of the glacier, looking at the ground to avoid any visible cracks. Until the inevitable happened. We met a guided group whose monitor stared at us and asked us where we got the sticks: down there, we answer. The kid laughed, advised us to be careful and left with his group. We were still laughing and commenting on how awesome this guy was when we met another group, this time guided by a girl.

I don't know if responsibility is something inherent to women rather than men, but something tells me that the genes of one and the other determine it. The anger that fell to us was vintage. That if those sticks are ours, that if we were unconscious - tell my mother, I thought - that if a helicopter rescue was worth a paste and we would have to pay it ... etc ... etc. The aunt became confused with the ice as her face became blue from the congestion of anger. What a genius!. For a moment, it occurred to us to ask him if he knew of a place to go for a night out in the town, but we decided to nod to everything he said and ask for forgiveness while we began to go down where we had come. When he had disappeared from our sight, we turned around and kept climbing ... If they are like children!

The truth is that there came a point where the hiking boots no longer adhered to the ice and I decided to stop and wait for Rober and Oscar, who continued a little longer until they did not see it clear and got off.

We spent all morning on this adventure in Fox and headed south thinking about the story we had read on the bulletin board of the tourist information point: Australian tourist found dead in perfect condition inside a crack of the Fox glacier.

Be careful but there are things and places that you will only visit and do once in a lifetime. This was worth it.
